How the 15 Puzzle Solving Method Works
A 15 puzzle is a 4x4 sliding tile game with fifteen numbered tiles and one empty space. A legal move slides one adjacent tile into that space. The goal is to arrange 1 through 15 from left to right and top to bottom, leaving the empty space in the lower-right corner. This playable 4x4 slide puzzle is always solvable because every shuffle is made from legal moves starting at the completed layout.
A practical way to learn how to solve a 15 puzzle sliding tile game is to protect finished sections instead of chasing every number at once. Build the first row, then the second row, then work down the left side before finishing the smaller area that remains. The stage display follows that order and marks how many tiles in the current section are already correct.
Use Guide when you are stuck. It highlights the next legal tile and shows the remaining moves on a known short route back to the solved board. It is a learning aid rather than a universal sliding puzzle solver, so it does not claim a mathematically shortest solution. If you explore away from the route, the coach guides you back through reversible moves. Undo reverses one move, Reset restores the starting arrangement, and New Puzzle creates another solvable board.
This slide puzzle online also works as a simple number slide practice game. On a phone, tap a numbered tile beside the empty space. On desktop, click it or focus it and press Enter or Space. Moves and elapsed time stay in the current page session; no account, upload, score grade, or remote puzzle storage is used.
